Hello. I'm having trouble with getting a Form 8889 triggered in ProConnect for a spouse — or if I do get one triggered, then a Form 5329 with an excess HSA contribution is triggered incorrectly.

Taxpayer had $8,250 contributed to HSA by employer; shows on his W-2. Taxpayer turned 55 in 2025.

Spouse had $417 contributed to HSA by employer; shows on her W-2. Spouse is under 55.

If in the 8889 input section, I enter 2 for family plan for taxpayer and leave that field blank for spouse, I get an 8889 only for the taxpayer, none for spouse.

If I enter either 1 or 2 for the spouse, I do get an 8889 for the spouse, but also the incorrect 5329, showing a $2,975 excess HSA contribution.

So what do I do to get the spouse's 8889 but not the 5329?

Override the Allocable Share of Limitation for each spouse. The software defaults to a 50/50 allocation.

That worked. I see that's in the commonly asked questions, but it wasn't sinking in for me. Thank you!
