Because he is over 17 his parents doesn't receive anything for him where as if he claim himself wouldn't he get a check?

Is that a good reason? Do you agree that the student can simply claim himself not to be a dependent of the parents even if all the facts say otherwise?

Parents do get the benefit for credit for other dependent, but I agree with @itonewbie to let the law decides if the student is a dependent or not, and the rest follow.
