Was he the named beneficiary on these accounts? If so, his SSN is on the1099-Rs in his capacity as beneficiary and he would have reported this on his 1040.
EDIT: But if this is the case, these accounts would not have gone through probate. Either you don't have the facts straight or you don't understand them.
