I bought the Basic + 50 returns, so I wouldn't use the pay per return. Does it matter which I download? I don't want a surprise charge for downloading the Professional version.

You can prepare 50 returns in Basis with no additional charges.  That is the main program you will want to use.

You can download Professional with no additional charges.

You can even prepare returns in Professional with no additional charges.  But if you want to print or e-file, you will pay the Pay-Per-Return fee.  It is common for a Basic user to use Basic for their 1040s, but possibly use Professional if they have any corporations, partnerships or situations that Basic does not cover (such as NOLs).
