Why can't I open EasyACCT or Information Return System?

If you get Run Time Error 429 when trying to open either EasyACCT or Information Return System try the following steps below.

Before you start:

  1. Open Windows Task Manager.
  2. Make sure that W32mkde isn't currently running.
  3. If W32mkde is present, click on it, and then click End task.
    • If this process is already running, EasyACCT won't open.
  4. Make sure that EZACCTW.exe isn't currently running.
  5. If EZACCTW.exe is present, click on it, and then click End task.

Follow these steps to resolve Run Time Error 429:

  1. Run in Compatibility mode as the administrator using the steps below: 
    1. Right-click on the EasyACCT or Information Return System icon and select Properties
    2. Select the Compatibility tab.
    3. Select Run as Administrator.
    4. Click Apply.
    5. Click OK to open the program.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Delete your temporary internet files and temp files.
  • You may delete temporary internet files and temp files using Disk Cleanup:
    1. In the search box on the taskbar, type disk cleanup, and select Disk Cleanup from the list of results.
    2. Select the drive you want to clean up (C:), and then click OK.
    3. Under Files to delete, uncheck the following if they were automatically selected by default:
      • Downloaded program files
      • Thumbnail
    4. While under Files to delete, select only the following file types, if not already selected:
      • Temporary internet files
      • Temporary files
    5. Click OK to run Disk Cleanup.
  1. Check the DPI setting. Recommended scaling size is 100%.
  • You may check your DPI settings by doing the following:
    1. Right-click on your Desktop and select Display settings.
      • If you have multiple monitors, you will need to choose one first.
    2. Under Scale and layout, ensure 100% (Recommended) is selected.
  1. If the program still doesn't open:
    1. Click on the Start button and select Computer.
    2. Find the C:\Windows directory.
    3. Search for the EZACCTW.INI (or IRSW2023.INI) file and delete it.
  2. Turn the UAC down in Windows.
    1. Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the User Account Control Settings.
    2. Lower the notification to Never notify.
  3. In some cases, reinstalling missing and damaged files is necessary:
    1. Go to C:\EASYW\NETWORK\setup.exe (C:\IRS2023\NETWORK\setup.exe)
    2. Follow the on-screen prompts, selecting Reinstall all files to restore missing or damaged files.
    3. Be sure to reboot after any install or update.

This requires modification of the Windows Registry. Serious problems may occur if the registry is modified incorrectly. Intuit strongly recommends having an IT professional make these changes if you are not comfortable with editing the registry. It's also strongly recommended to make a backup of the registry before proceeding. See here for further instruction.

  1. Browse to the local drive where the program is installed, normally the C: drive.
    • If you are unsure which drive it may be, you can check by right-clicking the program icon on your desktop and selecting Properties. The install location will be shown in the Start In box.
  2. Once there, find the EASYW folder and rename it to EASYWold. (C:\EASYWold)
  3. In the search box on the Windows taskbar, type the letters “reg” and open the Registry Editor.
  4. Once Registry Editor is open, go to the File menu and select Export.
  5. On the Export Registry File screen:
    1. Select your desktop as the Save Location. 
    2. For the file name use REGBCKYY (where the YY is the 2-digit day)
    3. Once the above is done, click Save.
  6. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432NodePCG_EZA_L4p5RradA_cleaninstall_6.png
  7. Find the Btrieve technologies folder and delete it.PCG_EZA_L4p5RradA_cleaninstall_7.png
  8. Now find the EasyACCT folder and expand it. 
  9. Under the EasyACCT folder, find the version of the program that you are going to remove and delete that folder.
  1. Close the Registry Editor and open the Windows File Explorer by clicking the manila folder icon on the Windows taskbar. (or Win+e on your keyboard)
  2. Sign in My Accountand download the latest version of EasyACCT.
  3. Install EasyACCT from the download.
  1. Access your firewall settings. How you go about doing this is going to vary depending on the system or service used.
  2. In the option to allow internet access to specific programs, make sure EasyACCT (Information Return System) is allowed.
  3. Exclude the following URL from your firewall: 

Some important things to keep in mind when using antivirus software:

  • Never have more than one antivirus program running in realtime scanning mode.
  • When updating other programs, make sure that you are not allowing them to automatically install extra toolbars and antivirus programs.

Restarting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking will turn off unnecessary programs to determine if there is a software conflict.

To return the computer to normal startup after using Safe Mode, go through steps 1-3, and uncheck the Safe Boot box.
