Community property states and the MFJ / MFS worksheet

ProConnect Tax Online will automatically apply the community property rules based on the taxpayer's Resident State as of 12/31.
To override the automatic designation:

  1. Go to the General > Misc. Info./Direct Deposit screen.
  2. Enter a 1 or 2 in Apply community property rules: 1=no, 2=yes.

When applying the community property rules, you can indicate on the primary input screens whether an item belongs to Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint. Items marked joint will be split 50/50 on the comparison worksheet. Review IRS Publication 555 for details on community property regulations.

  1. Go to the General > Client Information screen.
  2. Scroll down to the Filing Status section.
  3. Check the MFJ vs MFS Comparison box.

Note: The comparison is only available when your filing status is 2=Married filing jointly.
