DMS Toolbar: The 'Save in DMS' button is missing from Microsoft Office applications.

by Intuit Updated a day ago

The DMS toolbar is no longer supported in current versions of Microsoft Office.

The Save in DMS button is from an Office add-in that is part of Document Management System. It lets you save files directly to DMS instead of having to save them locally and then move them to DMS.

This add-in is designed for 32-bit versions of Office, and isn't compatible with current versions of Office.

The legacy solutions for the toolbar not appearing in the Office ribbon toolbar for are included below.

The Save in DMS button not showing in Add-Ins tab of the following Microsoft Office applications:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Power Point
  • Microsoft Outlook

Make sure the Save In DMS toolbar is enabled in DMS

Edit the Windows Registry to enable the "Save In DMS" button

This requires modification of the Windows Registry. Serious problems may occur if the registry is modified incorrectly. Intuit strongly recommends having an IT professional make these changes if you are not comfortable with editing the registry. It's also strongly recommended to make a backup of the registry before proceeding. See here for further instruction.

  1. Exit DMS and the Microsoft Office applications.
  2. On your keyboard, press Windows key and to open the Run prompt.
  3. In the Open box type regedit and click OK.  This will open the Registry Editor.
  4. Select the following registry key:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lacerte\DMS\ProgramOptions\OfficeToolbarSettings\xxxx

  5. Double-click the Visible registry key under the Name column.
  6. In the Value data field, enter a and click OK.
  7. Double-click the Enabled registry key under the Name column.
  8. In the Value data field, enter a and click OK.
  9. Close the Registry Editor and open the Microsoft Office application.
  10. Click on the Add-Ins tab and you should now see the Save In DMS toolbar.

If the OfficeToolbarSettings folder does not appear in the registry, you can export the registry folder from a workstation the "Save in DMS"  is working properly on.

  1. Go to a PC where the DMS is working properly.
  2. Open the Registry Editor as done in Solution 3.
  3. Right-click on the OfficeToolbarSettings folder/regkey and choose Export.
  4. Name the file Save in DMS and save it to your Desktop.
  5. Copy the file to the PC with the problem.
  6. Close the Registry Editor, DMS, and all Office apps.
  7. Double-click the Save in DMS.reg file and click Yes to import the information.
  8. Check for the DMS toolbar now.

Add the DMS program path as Trusted Location in MS Word

  1. Click the Office icon in the upper left corner of Word.
  2. Select the Word Options button in the lower right corner of the drop-down window that opens. The Word Options window will be displayed.
  3. Click the Trust Center option located on the left side of the Word Options window.
  4. Click the Trust Center Settings... button in the main window.
  5. Click the Trusted Locations options from the left side of the Trust Center window and look for a DMS listing in the main window.
  • If it is not there, add it by:
    • Clicking the Add new location.... button near the lower right corner.
    • Type C:\Program Files\Intuit\DMS into the Path box. You can also elect to Browse to the location as well.
    • Click OK to complete adding DMS to the Trusted Locations window.
  1. Click OK to close all the other option windows, then close and reopen Word.
  2. The menu option called Add-Ins should now be available.

If the toolbar still fails to show, it is possible that it is being blocked or is not allowed.  Some things to try:

  • Login as the Administrator.
  • Restart the PC with non-Microsoft service and startup items disabled with MSCONFIG.
  • Uninstall and reinstall DMS.
  • Repair install Office.
  • Make sure the version of Office is 32bit, the 64bit version is not supported as DMS is a 32bit app.
  • Right-click on DMS and Office shortcuts and choose Run As Admin (Windows 7 and Windows Vista).

The following error may also appear:

Outlook experienced a serious problem with DMS toolbar for Microsoft application add-in.

If you have seen this message multiple time you should disable this add-in and check to see if an update is available.

Do you want to disable this add-in?

No confirmation on what will fix it yet, but reports of restarting Outlook and running as Admin may work.  Choosing not to disable the add-in will work too, but message will still appear.
