How to reset the primary or e-file password in ProSeries

Follow these steps to reset the e-file password if the primary password is known:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Options.
  2. From the Options screen, select Passwords from the left menu.
  3. Enter the current password in the Enter existing primary password field.
    • If this field is in gray, you haven't set a primary password yet.
  4. Enter the new password in the Enter new primary password and Re-enter new primary password to confirm fields.
    • Once you enter a primary password, the ProSeries should always prompt for the electronic filing password checkbox will no longer be grayed out.
  5. Click the ProSeries should always prompt for the electronic filing password checkbox to disable this setting.
  6. Click Yes on the message asking to delete the E-file Password.
  1. From the Tools menu, select Options.
  2. Click on Passwords on the left side.
  3. Click in the first available Primary Password field.
  4. Hold down the ALT + F12 + C on your keyboard to open the Resetting the Primary Password dialog box.
    • If you're running ProSeries remotely and using a MAC keyboard, use FN + Option + F12 + C.
  5. Contact Customer Service and provide the 6-digit code on screen to them.
    • Refer to this article for contact information, including hours of operation.
  6. Enter authorization code provided by the customer service agent and click OK.
    • This will reset both your primary password and electronic filing password to the authorization code.
    • Enter this code in the Enter existing primary password and Enter existing electronic filing password fields when changing these passwords.
  7. Enter a new password in the Primary Password section, if desired.
  8. Under Electronic Filing Transmission, check the ProSeries should always prompt for the electronic filing password box, if desired.
  9. Enter a new password in the Electronic Filing Transmission Password section, if desired.
  10. Click OK.
