Entering gambling winnings and losses in ProSeries

This article will assist you with entering information from Form W-2G, Certain Gambling Winnings, and related losses for an individual return in ProSeries.

Follow these steps enter a Gambling Income from a W-2G in the program:

  1. Open the tax return.
  2. Press F6 to bring up Open Forms.
  3. Type W2G and select OK to bring up Select Form W-2G Worksheet.
  4. Enter a description and select Create.
    • You can enter up to 4 W-2G's on a single Form W-2G Worksheet. Use the QuickZoom to another W-2G Worksheet at the top to create additional copies.
  5. Enter boxes 1-20.
  6. If you are e-filing enter the Payer's information in the Form W-2G Additional Electronic Filing Information Smart Worksheet.

Follow these steps to enter gambling losses in the program:

  1. Open a Form W-2 G Worksheet.
  2. Enter the gambling winnings.
  3. Enter any other applicable information.
  4. At the bottom of the worksheet, use the QuickZoom to enter gambling losses (to the extent of winnings).
    • You can only enter an amount that is less then the gambling income, minus any excluded amount of gambling income from the 2555. If you enter an amount greater then the available winnings, you'll see the following error in final review: Misc Itemized Deductions Wks: Line 30 - Other, less gambling losses excluded on Form 2555, should not be greater then gambling winnings on the Other Income Statement, line 2.
  5. Enter the loss amount on Line 30 of the Misc Itemized Deductions Statement.
    • This was Line 29 in previous years.
  6. Make sure that the correct amount appears on the Schedule A.
