Transferring or copying assets into an existing client file
by Intuit• Updated 1 month ago
How can I copy depreciable asset information from one client file to an existing client file?
There is no way to automatically copy or transfer depreciation from one module to another. With the help of batch input and completed input sheets, you can greatly reduce the time it takes to re-enter the assets.
Solution #1
Starting in the client file that has the depreciation assets:
- Click Print.
- Select Input Sheets.
- Click on Suppress All Input Sheets.
- Scroll down to the Depreciation input sheets.
- Select When Applicable for all Depreciation screens listed (except for the Depreciation (Grid) as that sheet is not necessary).
- Select Print.
Once the Depreciation input sheets have printed, close the Input sheet window and exit that client.
Go to the other client file you want to copy the assets to:
- Go to the Depreciation screen.
- Press CTRL+ W (this will switch you Batch input mode).
- Click on Add.
- Click on the first field under the Code column and begin entering the information from the input sheet.
- Hit the ENTER key to move between columns, it will automatically take you to the appropriate column based on the code you have entered. So code 800 will automatically take you to the Description field when you hit ENTER after typing it in.
- Continue to enter codes and amounts or descriptions as they appear in the completed input sheets until you have entered all your assets.
- Press CTRL + W (to return to Interactive Input mode).
Solution #2
- Highlight the client on the client screen in the original module.
- Go to the Client Menu ⮕ Export ⮕ Export Depreciation to File.
- Save in the location that you choose.
- Switch to the new module.
- Go to the Client Menu ⮕ Import ⮕ Fixed Asset Import.
- Select the applicable form to import to (i.e. Schedule C, Form 1065, etc.), Activity Name/Number, and browse to the file that you previously saved in step 3.
- Click Next and select the corresponding data fields depending on the module you are moving to that match the data. It requires at minimum the Description, Date placed in service, Cost/Basis to complete the import. Set any fields that you do not need to Do Not Import.
- Click Next and it will give you a preview of the import.
- Click Finish and it will pop up with a prompt to confirm procedure.
- Click Yes to perform the import.
- Click Go to Tax Program to open the client.
- Optional: Save as a template for future imports. Click Yes to save or No to skip.
