Common questions about Form 8879 in ProSeries

SOLVEDby Intuit7Updated October 12, 2023

Below are the most popular articles associated with Form 8879.

The Submission ID (SID) replaces the obsolete Declaration Control Number (DCN) for Individual returns.

ProSeries will automatically enter the 20-digit Submission ID Number on Form 8879, upon receipt of an accepted acknowledgement from the IRS. Per the 8879 form instructions:

"6. Enter the 20-digit Submission Identification Number (SID) assigned to the return... with Form 8879 after filing."

Because the IRS requires Form 8879 to be completed and signed before e-filing, you'll need to do one of the following:

  • Manually write the SID on the completed and signed copy, or
  • Print a new copy of Form 8879 (with SID) and attach it to the signed original copy.

Example:

  1. Complete the Individual return.
  2. Make sure Form 8879 is complete and accurate.
  3. Have the taxpayer and spouse review the tax return.
  4. If the return is aaccurate, the taxpayer and spouse must sign Form 8879.
  5. E-file the Individual return after you have received the completed and signed Form 8879.
  6. Check for e-file acknowledgements within 24–48 hours.
  7. After the Accepted Acknowledgement has been received, print and attach the new Form 8879 to the original Form 8879, or manually write the SID number on the original Form 8879.
