I live in an area where there is a higher than normal elderly population. Id love to see a button added or something as to how it can easily swap the taxpayer and spouse when one passes (even MFS when it occurs) to allow a more efficient tax return.
as of now, its a mess to do and haven't found an easy way.
In the year of death, it's still a joint return, and really doesn't make a difference. You just have to point out the correct line to sign "as surviving spouse." My experience is that in the following year, the program automatically picks up just the surviving spouse, even if she is the second listed on the previous joint return.
Oh, never mind. I just clicked this on and thought that Intuit had left the barn door open again and some wife swapping website had moved in. 😲
The biggest pain I run into with the software when a spouse dies is the confusion left with the software when you are dealing with 1099Rs. The software gets a case of Alzheimer's not knowing who the 1099Rs belong to.
