Currently, the ProSeries software has a line for each dependent and a code — L, N, O, Q — that determines how a dependent is to be used in the current year’s tax return.

However, more and more, dependent situations are becoming complex. Some dependents should be on a tax return in some years and completely off the returns in others. It would be very helpful to have a code — 😧 dormant this year. Do not consider in any calculations or for the EIC/childcare expenses. And, do not include on any state tax returns.

In subsequent years, when the dependent should be included in the return in some capacity, their code can be changed.

Thanks for the idea to add a code for not considering any calculations or for the EIC/childcare expenses year over year. We are changing the status to "Open for voting".

I generally select the code as 'not a dependent but qualifies for EIC/dependent care credit', then I mark the EIC box as a non-qualifying person.  And leave the child care expenses for that child blank (don't enter zero).

Maybe I'm missing something, but think that covers it all.

Yes, thank you. I do that now, too. But, it would be easier/quicker to have a distinct code. And, there is a chance a preparer can miss checking off the box for not qualifying for the EIC. Some states also have a state EIC amount and that needs to checked, too.
