Is this what you meant to ask...
Turn that around:
Question: Why is State TIN and Address required for 1099-G?
Answer: When that form includes something that has to be reported, such as State refund that was deducted in prior year, or Unemployment, the IRS and/or State(s) want to know where the money came from.

Thank you for your reply,
However the info requested wasn't required in the past and isn't required on all returns.Need to find out why. Problem is, the state Federal ID number and address isn't anywhere on the prior years' return, nor is it easily obtained anywhere.
Do you happen to know what the NJ Federal TIN is and the address? It's impossible to talk with anyone from the state. Seems others have had that problem in the past and I can't find the answer.Thank you
