I have multiple 1040 extensions rejecting today with the following error:
Error Message: 'ReturnTypeCd' (specified in the Return Header) and the return version (specified by the 'returnVersion' attribute of the 'Return' element) of the return must match the return type and the version supported by the Modernized e-File system.
Solution: The IRS will not accept an e-file extension for a return unless the return being extended is for the current tax year, and the extension is filed before the return's original due date.
Code: R0000-004-01
I've filed lots of extensions (we extend every return), and I've never gotten this error.

How does that explanation relate to the error description and code I provided?

Weird things happen early on in the filing season. I can't explain it and you evidently can't either if you are asking the question. I know once upon a time, you couldn't file extensions this early in the filing season. Try again another day or call support.

I believe that you believe these responses are helpful; however, they're not. So you if you don't have an actual solution or recommendation (besides "Try another day"), please leave yourself out of my inbox. Thanks, and good luck this year!

Hi, the rejection is coming directly from the IRS system. Currently, they are not accepting extensions for the 2025 tax year filings.

Is it still true that the IRS is not accepting individual (1040) extensions as of 1/28? Filing was supposed to open on 1/26. Any update on when these will be accepted. Is this truly an IRS issue or a ProConnect software issue?

Hi, the rejection is coming from the IRS system not ProConnect. We do not have an ETA currently on when they will allow transmission of extensions at this time. E-filing, however, is open and returns can be transmitted.

Any update on the timing of when individual extensions can be e-filed with the IRS? According to the information at this link (https://accountants.intuit.com/support/en-us/help-article/electronic-filing/2023-proconnect-tax-tax-...) they should be accepting them as of 1/26/26.

That's the date the IRS 'opened' for e-filing. It doesn't mean that all Forms were available as of day one.

At that link it specifically says that Individual Extensions filed with the IRS are available on 1/26/26,
