My client has Fujitus fi-S3100i scanners and they are intermittently talking to DMS and I see that DMS advises against the fi model line.

I have specific experience with this scanner. I recall that having TWAIN (Thing Without An Interesting Name) is generally really important.
From the Fujitsu I see:
Driver | ScanSnap specific driver Windows®: Does not support TWAIN / ISIS® macOS: Does not support TWAIN |

correct the scansnap line is not TWAIN, but the higher end scanner line is, but they are very costly.
Hence asking for make/model of other brands which are known to work well with DMS.

I use a Fujitsu ScanSnap LX-500, but I have never used DMS.
The only Twain I know is Mark.
