closed programs...rebooted... checked printer settings.. rebooted again... all the usual things have not worked.

What does this mean? "checked printer settings"
Go into Windows Printer Settings, make sure to select one as Default and make sure to Disable the option to let Windows manage your printers for you. You want the Programs to manage printers, when they need to access printers.

Did you try Repair Updates?
Do you have a network installation? You should have general (system wide) and user (specific) options.
Did you search google for:
ProSeries printer
