the c corp was established 3/24/19 fiscal year end is 9/30/2019... creates an error

Do the input in the 2019 program. Probably best to file extension, since I doubt the program will be fully polished by the due date 1/15/2020/

If you are entering that on the 2018 program you are going to come up with that kind of error.

Looks like there is no 1120 available yet for 2019...so what do corps in this situation do? just file an extension?

File an extension. Or, can be done on 2018 forms manually, with 2019 dates written in, and paper filed.

Is there some kind of advantage to choosing a fiscal year over a calendar year?

Some people think so - ie using a natural business year. Personal service corps have some hoops to jump through if they choose fiscal year.
