The IRMN is correct. To put this another way:
* No, you don't have to wet sign every return but you do need to print your name in the preparer's signature block and PS can do that for you.
* No, your PTIN is not sufficient. It stays in the PTIN box and is for a different purpose than printing your name on the return as your mechanical signature.

You can have the software print your name but what do you mean by “e-file down”?

The PTIN is on every return even if you paper file. Every taxpayer has to sign the 8879.

In fact, if it's a software or network problem that prevented the preparer from filing the return electronically, the taxpayer wouldn't have to sign the 8879 but the preparer will need to prepare and file an 8948 with the paper return.
