I received calls today from 2 different clients who received a letter from the IRS telling them they will not receive their refunds until a Direct Deposit bank account is set up. I had heard that the government was going to insist that anyone who was receiving refund checks would have to go Direct Deposit but I had no knowledge that it was going to start this year. Evidently Intuit didnt know either because I'd assume we'd get an error message. Im just wondering now if I could just Amend the original return with bank info. The letter didnt offer much help except to set up a gov't account. Any ideas to resolve this?

Had you waded through all the posts here complaining about some software you probably don't use, you would have seen this and other references to the same issue.

This sums it up pretty good, from the taxpayer advocate website Do not amend, that will not fix this.

Fortunately my clients pay me by check, so I already have the bank information. I have migrated most of them to direct deposit already, years ago. The last of the resistance comes from the retired letter carriers, who want to see the Post Office keep the business.
Just ask your clients if they want to get mail from IRS and then wait six weeks longer for a check. It's their choice.
