Hello,
I would like to know how to properly enter/allocate a 1098 mortgage interest statement in Proseries if the taxpayer has joint liability with another individual that is NOT their spouse. Proseries seems to be forcing line 8B on schedule A. The only thing that's throwing me off is 8b states "Home mortgage interest not reported to you on Form 1098. If paid to the person from whom you bought the home, show that person's name, identifying number, and address...SEE STMT" . When I check off not on form 1098, the deductible portion that I entered flows to 8b, but if I don't check that box, 8b is prompted either way once I enter the other party's information checking the box that they are jointly liable and the 1098 was issued to the other individual which is the case here. The taxpayer will not be deducting the full amount. I entered the taxpayers deductible portion in the worksheet and checked off not on 1098. I'm thinking to leave everything as IS, but the 8b wording is eh.
So as a summary: I have entered only the taxpayers deductible portion and checked off not on 1098 (because it isn't issued in the taxpayers name) on schedule A in the mortgage interest and points smart worksheet, which flowed to line 8b with the statement I wrote above. Then checked off that the 1098 was issued to someone else who's jointly liable and entered their information. Nowhere is the full amount on the 1098 that was issued to the other person. Only the deductible portion is entered in the worksheet that the taxpayer paid for. No statement was entered for 8b.
Thank you

You can enter the appropriate amount of interest on Sch A line 8 (without checking 'not of f1098') or enter the appropriate amount on the 1098 worksheet.... 1098 worksheet is not transmitted to the IRS.
