Client just received from Comptroller of Maryland $85 tax refund from 2008. No explanation. Client wants me to trace why. Sorry, don't have records going back 17 years and I'd have to charge you $86 to figure out why.
3 weeks out and Delaware still hasn't accepted my 2 open partnership returns.
Technology is great- when it works.

Comptroller also runs the Unclaimed Property program. My guess is that they decided to clear out a lot of small accounts when they got updated addresses for uncashed checks. Did the client call the state before calling you?

Of course the client did not call the state first. It's much easier to just ask the accountant.
The note on the check itself says 2008 tx ref so I know it's not unclaimed property, but that was a good guess.

Well, the least you could do is call a sample of your clients who received 2024 state tax refunds and ask them if those checks had 2008 or 2024 on them.
(Except, of course, most of them were direct deposit.)
