Moving expenses are not allowed due to the TCJA, except for military personnel as qbteachmt stated.

CA only allows moving expenses when you move INTO CA, not out of CA.

Also, it likely matters if this is income from a CA source (this employer is a CA firm) even though your client now is a nonresident. And if they relocated at the request ("for the convenience") of the employer, and if any of the move was reimbursed by that employer. The States that still allow this have their own eligibility tests. Have you worked through this for the Form 540NR?
