It looks like I responded too quickly; the Draft 1040 Instructions came out today.

Unfortunately, at first glance, it isn't particular clear if we need to check those boxes for a child under age 19.  The introduction to the Dependents section possibly implies to do it, but then the flow chart doesn't actually direct you to do it unless the child is not under age 19.
