I was able to disable auto updates several months ago (shortly after my original posting here) on all the workstations on my 6 user network. I don't receive notifications about needing updates until something like not being able to efile triggers the need to manually update the software. In other words, I am operating just like I have been using Lacerte tax software since forever. And that's fine with me. 

If auto updates work for you, congratulations.  They certainly messed with my network and they are now in the rear view mirror.
