We interviewed Kathy to find out more about her firm and what she plans to bring to the Council. Kathy has been in practice for almost 30 years; Hettick Accounting & Tax, LLC, is a small accounting and tax practice based in Enumclaw, Wash. that focuses on providing quality service to small business clients. Fun fact: the firm has an office dog, a Briard Terrier mix named Abe. Abe is a rescue who helps keep the office enjoyable and low stress. Kathy is a long-time Intuit ProConnect™ Lacerte® and QuickBooks® customer. Outside of work, Kathy enjoys running, hiking, and spending time with friends and family. Kathy considers her service to the industry to be one of her biggest accomplishments as a tax and accounting professional. She has been involved in the Washington Association of Accountants and Tax Professionals (WAATP), and recently completed service as president of the National Society of Accountants (NSA). She’s used these roles and service within different committees to advocate for tax professionals, and grow leadership programs at local and national levels. “My service is my biggest accomplishment and has been very rewarding,” said Kathy. Kathy also finds being an accountant very rewarding. “I love doing tax and feel grateful to love my job. As a tax professional, I’m really helping my clients prepare and file something that creates a lot of stress for people. I appreciate being able to help people get through that task.” Kathy plans on bringing her love of tax and service to her new role on the IRS Advisory Council and in the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) subgroup, which she joined in January. “I believe I provide value since I’m a tax professional. I see clients one-on-one across the desk from me and am knee-deep in the tax world. I can be a strong voice for tax professionals in the community when we’re evaluating different policies and recommendations.” Kathy pointed out the importance of the “committee” to making an impact. “This is a committee effort to evaluate what we see in the world and decide what we want to bring forward; this is a group of extremely smart people coming from all different avenues of the professional world.” Indeed, there’s no “I” in “team … Kathy is dedicated to serving her profession, the community and her clients, and we’re excited to see the impact she will make in her role on the IRS Advisory Council.
