There are many scammers posing as your bank, credit card company, tax software provider, or the IRS or state agency. The thing to remember is that credible organizations do not ask for sensitive information through unsecured methods, such as email. Also, the IRS doesn’t send unsolicited emails or make threatening phone calls. Email scams and illegitimate websites can infect your computer with viruses and malware. This malware can give others access to your computer or other devices, which can provide them with access to your personal information or track your keystrokes and login information. The following tips from the IRS can help you protect yourself and family members: Avoid suspicious phishing emails that appear to be from the IRS or other companies. Do not click on the links, but go directly to the official websites instead. Beware of phishing scams asking you to update or verify your accounts. To avoid malware, don’t open attachments in emails unless you know who sent it and what it contains. Download and install software only from websites you know and trust. Use security software to block pop-up ads, which can contain viruses. Ensure your family understands safe online and computer habits.
