Using the E-File Wizard for state returns in Lacerte
by Intuit•5• Updated 7 months ago
During the e-filing process, state returns for states marked with an asterisk will be sent to the IRS along with the federal return.
The IRS recommends this process for the following reasons:
- The IRS recommends sending state returns along with federal returns. This method ensures that your federal return is error-free before your state return is filed.
- If you file your state return directly with the state taxing agency and the IRS rejects your federal return, you'll likely need to paper-file an amended return with the state.
- Some states, like California or Massachusetts, can process returns on a standalone basis, so there's no need for you to send returns directly to the state taxing agency. Lacerte's processing center will route returns for standalone states automatically.
In the E-File Wizard: State Selection Screen, states marked with an asterisk will be sent to the IRS with the federal return (recommended). If you wish to send the return directly to the state, simply right-click on a state, and select Send directly to state tax authority.
