Common questions about federal and state individual estimated payments

by Intuit Updated 3 months ago

The following is a state-by-state guide to electronically filing estimated tax payments for individual returns. As part of our continuing effort to expand e-file availability and ensure compliance, Lacerte supports two different estimate e-filing methods - estimates e-filed with the tax return, and estimates transmitted separately using the Estimated Payment Wizard. The method you use will depend on the state you're filing.

  • Estimates e-filed with the tax return are transmitted with the initial filing of the return, and cannot be sent separately. The federal 1040 uses this method.
  • Estimates e-filed separately using the Estimated Payments Wizard are not sent with the tax return, and must be transmitted separately from the main filing.
