To amend a New Jersey return:
If you are planning to e-file this New Jersey amendment, make sure you select the New Jersey Amended for e-file on the Profile tab.
- From the Input Return tab, go to Miscellaneous Forms ⮕ Amended Return (1040-X)/Superseded ⮕ General Information and Federal (1040X).
- Check the box labeled Amending Federal Return if applicable.
- Enter a 1 in the input 1=Amending state return and set the state to NJ.
- Go to the Explanation of Changes tab.
- Enter the reason for amending the New Jersey return in New Jersey explanation of changes.
- Along the left side menu, select the NJ Amended Return (NJ 1040-X).
- Review the originally reported amounts in this input screen, and input any missing information if applicable.
- Make the amended inputs in the normal input screens (If amending the Schedule C, input the changes on the Schedule C input screen, if amending the wage amounts make your changes on the Wages, Salaries, Tips input screen, etc.).
Note: A Resident New Jersey return (NJ-1040) will generate a NJ-1040X amended return form. A Nonresident New Jersey return (NJ-1040NR) will not generate a NJ-1040X. There is not a separate form for amending a non resident return. Making inputs for amending the New Jersey return will instead check the This is an amended return box at the top of the NJ-1040NR.
