When to file an amended New Jersey return

  • File Form NJ-1040X to amend a previously filed New Jersey resident return.
  • File Form NJ-1040NR to amend a nonresident return.
  • Amendments are required when:
    • Income, deductions, or credits change after the original return was filed.
    • The IRS adjusts federal taxable income.
    • Residency status changes (full-year → part-year, or vice versa).

How to generate an amended New Jersey return in Lacerte

Resident return amendments (NJ-1040X):

  1. Open the client return.
  2. Go to Screen 59, Amended Return.
  3. Mark the Amended Return checkbox.
  4. Enter explanation(s) for the amendment in the designated field.
  5. Review Form NJ-1040X in Forms view.
  6. Print and mail the amended return—NJ does not currently accept e-filed amended returns.

Nonresident return amendments (NJ-1040NR):

  1. Open the client return.
  2. Go to Screen 59, Amended Return.
  3. Mark the Amended Return checkbox.
  4. Enter explanation(s) for the amendment in the designated field.
  5. Review Form NJ-1040NR with the amended entries.
  6. Print and mail to the New Jersey Division of Taxation.

Part-year New Jersey returns

Part-year residents may need to file both resident and nonresident forms depending on their move dates and income sources.

  1. Go to Screen 1, Client Information.
  2. Enter the dates of residency in New Jersey.
  3. Go to Screen 55, Part-Year/Nonresident Information.
  4. Allocate income between New Jersey and other states.
  5. Lacerte generates:
    • Form NJ-1040 for the resident portion.
    • Form NJ-1040NR for the nonresident portion.

E-file note: Amended returns (NJ-1040X and NJ-1040NR) must be printed and mailed. E-file is not available for New Jersey amended individual returns.
