When to file an amended New Jersey return
- File Form NJ-1040X to amend a previously filed New Jersey resident return.
- File Form NJ-1040NR to amend a nonresident return.
- Amendments are required when:
- Income, deductions, or credits change after the original return was filed.
- The IRS adjusts federal taxable income.
- Residency status changes (full-year → part-year, or vice versa).

How to generate an amended New Jersey return in Lacerte
Resident return amendments (NJ-1040X):
- Open the client return.
- Go to Screen 59, Amended Return.
- Mark the Amended Return checkbox.
- Enter explanation(s) for the amendment in the designated field.
- Review Form NJ-1040X in Forms view.
- Print and mail the amended return—NJ does not currently accept e-filed amended returns.

Nonresident return amendments (NJ-1040NR):
- Open the client return.
- Go to Screen 59, Amended Return.
- Mark the Amended Return checkbox.
- Enter explanation(s) for the amendment in the designated field.
- Review Form NJ-1040NR with the amended entries.
- Print and mail to the New Jersey Division of Taxation.
Part-year New Jersey returns
Part-year residents may need to file both resident and nonresident forms depending on their move dates and income sources.
- Go to Screen 1, Client Information.
- Enter the dates of residency in New Jersey.
- Go to Screen 55, Part-Year/Nonresident Information.
- Allocate income between New Jersey and other states.
- Lacerte generates:
- Form NJ-1040 for the resident portion.
- Form NJ-1040NR for the nonresident portion.
E-file note: Amended returns (NJ-1040X and NJ-1040NR) must be printed and mailed. E-file is not available for New Jersey amended individual returns.
