How to add, delete, or modify a Preparer in Lacerte

Before you start:

• Information can be entered for up to 500 preparers in the firm. Information for each preparer may be added, modified or deleted as desired.
• We recommend entering information for all preparers in your firm because many program features, such as the Appointment Manager and Database Reports, use this information. Additionally, Mailing Labels, Status Reports, and the Client Lists can be sorted by preparer.

To Add a preparer or Modify an existing preparer:

1. From the Settings menu, select Options or Primary Options.
2. Select the Preparers tab.
3. Click the number to assign to the new preparer or select the number of the preparer you wish to modify.
4. Click the Modify button.
5. Enter the Preparer Information
   • Name
   • Phone Number
   • E-mail Address
   • PTIN
   • Social Security Number and any other additional information
6. Click OK.
7. Repeat Steps 3-5 for each Preparer.
8. Click OK to save the changes.

To verify your PTIN and resolve diagnostic 54810:

1. From the Settings menu, select Options or Primary Options.
2. Select the Tax Return tab.
3. Select the Tax Return Options section.
4. On the PTIN Verification line choose Yes.

PTIN Verification is now required starting in 2020 for some states including Arizona, Connecticut, Idaho, Minnesota and Oregon. These steps are required to clear the error e-file: Please verify that the PTIN has not changed from prior year. (ref. #54810).

To Delete a preparer:

1. From the Settings menu, select Options or Primary Options.
2. Select the Preparers tab.
3. Click on the number of the preparer you want to delete.
4. Click Delete.
5. Select Yes.
6. Repeat Step 3-5 for each Preparer you want to delete.
7. Click OK to save the changes.
