How to resolve Diagnostic 46584 in Lacerte

by Intuit Updated 2 weeks ago

If you're recieving the following diagnostic:

"New York requires a Document ID/State-Issued PIN for the primary taxpayer when Driver's License information has been entered for authentication. The State-Issued PIN is the 8- or 10-digit number on the lower right corner of the license, permit or non-driver ID, or on the back if it was produced after January 28, 2014.

If the document has been recently replaced and the replacement has not been received in the mail yet, and you are trying to do an online transaction, the number from the old document won't work. You need to wait for the new document to arrive.

On enhanced documents issued after 1/28/2014, the document number begins after “IDUSA” and is on the back of the document.

This diagnostic is triggered when:

  • You enter Driver’s License or State ID information in Lacerte for the primary taxpayer, and
  • The Document ID/State-Issued PIN field is missing, blank, or incorrect, which New York requires for identity verification when filing.

New York uses this ID as part of its fraud prevention and identity authentication for e-filed individual returns.

To resolve this diagnostic

  1. Go to Screen 1, Client Information.
  2. In the Authentication section, complete the following fields for the taxpayer (and spouse, if applicable):
    • ID Type: Select Driver’s License or State ID
    • Driver's License/State ID #: Enter a 9- to 10-character alphanumeric ID
    • Driver's License State: Select NY from the dropdown
    • Issue Date: Enter the date the license was issued
    • Expiration Date: Enter the license’s expiration date
  3. In the New York Information section (lower portion of Screen 1):
    • Enter the Taxpayer Document ID / State-Issued PIN
      • For standard NY IDs: This is found in the lower right corner of the front of the license
      • For enhanced NY IDs issued after January 28, 2014: The ID appears on the back, beginning after “IDUSA”
  4. Confirm that all required fields are complete and accurate.
  5. Recalculate the return. The diagnostic should now be cleared.

If the taxpayer recently replaced their license and has not received the updated card, the old Document ID cannot be used. Wait until the new ID arrives before e-filing.
