For more resources on program errors in Lacerte, check out our troubleshooting page where you'll find help with installation, program launch, and program use.
When launching the Lacerte Tax program, it fails with the following error message (or similar):
- "Error Initializing Config: Access Violation in module W??Tax.exe"
- "Error Initializing Config: Access Violation in module vcl60.bpl"
- "Error Initializing Config: Access Violation at 000000000"
Before you start:
- This article references default installation paths and uses YY to reference the tax year in 20YY format. C: will always indicate the local drive and X: will always indicate the network drive.
If this happens on one or more workstations, try renaming the Pro*** files. If it happens on all years, change the default printer driver. If the error continues rename the .INI file.
Rename the WYYTax.ini file:
Performing these steps will reset the Fonts & Colors and Display columns at the top of the screen.
- Close Lacerte Tax (all versions) and any other open programs.
- Hold down the Windows key and press "R" to open the Run box.
- Copy and paste the below path for the impacted year of Lacerte:
- 2010-current Lacerte-Â Â Â %USERPROFILE%\Appdata\Roaming\Lacerte
- 2009 Lacerte-Â Â Â %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lacerte
- 2007-2008 Lacerte-Â Â Â %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Lacerte
- 2006 & below-Â Â Â C:\Windows
- After you paste the path, press Enter to open the folder.
- Find the wYYTax.ini for the correct year.
- Right-click the .ini file and choose Rename.
- Add -old at the end. For example, 2025 would say w25tax.ini-old.
- Close the window and see if you can get into Lacerte.
If deleting the PRO*** files does not resolve, rename entire Option?? folder then copy over desired option files after program is able to open.
