How to resolve Lacerte diagnostic ref 16402 - TX taxpayer webfile number or total revenue required

This article will help resolve the following e-file critical diagnostic for a single member LLC TX franchise return:

  • e-file: Texas requires at least one of the following values to verify the preparer has the authorization of the taxpayer to prepare the franchise return: 1. Taxpayer's webfile number (security code mailed to all franchise taxpayers). It can be retrieved by calling the Electronic Reporting Section at 1-800-442-3453 or 2. Total Revenue from the latest TX Franchise Tax return by the taxpayer (if zero, the webfile number must be used). The state of Texas will reject the return if the information entered is incorrect. (ref. #16402)

Invalid or missing information will generate an e-file rejection code 3696:

  • Invalid Security Information. Webfile number or last reported revenue is incorrect or blank. Contact Texas Comptroller at 1-800-442-3453

For TY20 and newer:

  1. Click on the diagnostic. This will take you to Screen 54.431, Texas Franchise Tax.
  2. Under Texas Miscellaneous, enter the WebFile# or Total Revenue.
  3. Also verify the Webfile number is listed on the screens below based on the tax type:
    • Individual Module - Screen 54.431, Electronic Filing in the Texas Miscellaneous section.
    • Partnership Module - Screen 4, Electronic Filing in the Texas Miscellaneous section.
    • Corporate Module - Screen 4.2, Electronic Filing in the Texas Miscellaneous section.
    • S-Corporation Module - Screen 3.2, Electronic Filing in the Texas Miscellaneous section.
  1. Go to Screen 4, Electronic Filing.
  2. Select the Texas Miscellaneous section from the lower-left sections menu..
  3. Enter the webfile number in WebFile # or:
    • Go to Screen 54, Taxes > Texas Prior Year Returns.
    • Scroll down to the Form 05-163 section.
    • Enter the revenue in Total revenue.
