Common questions about Form 8606 in ProConnect Tax
by Intuit• Updated 2 months ago
This article answers frequently asked questions about Form 8606, Nondeductible IRAs.
Where do I enter nondeductible contributions for line 1?
- Go to Input Return ⮕ Deductions ⮕ Adjustments to Income.
- Enter the full dollar amount of traditional IRA contributions in IRA contributions (1=maximum deduction).
Why aren't amounts flowing to lines 7 or 8?
IRA distributions and conversions should flow automatically from your entries on Pensions, IRA Distributions. If these lines are blank, make sure that you've checked the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box on the appropriate 1099-R input.
Form 8606, Nondeductible IRAs isn't generating in ProConnect
Per IRS instructions, the Form 8606, Nondeductible IRAs isn't needed if there is no distribution or contribution during the tax year.
If Form 8606 is not generating:
- If a 1 for maximum deduction is entered in Deductions ⮕ Adjustments to Income in the IRA contributions (1 = maximum deduction) field, ProConnect will calculate the maximum deductible contribution allowed and not generate Form 8606.
- When you enter a dollar amount and the taxpayer or spouse is covered by a retirement plan, ProConnect carries the nondeductible amount to Form 8606.
- Make sure the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box in Pensions, IRA Distributions is selected. If it isn't selected, amounts flow to 16b instead of 15b, and Form 8606 won't generate.
To force Form 8606 Nondeductible IRAs to be included with Form 1040:
- Go to Input Return ⮕ Deductions ⮕ Adjustments to Income.
- Scroll down to Form 8606 (Part I).
- Enter a 2 in the field 1=not filing with Form 1040, 2=force.
If the taxpayer and spouse are not required to file Form 1040 but are required to file Form 8606 with the taxpayer's address printed at the top of Form 8606:
- Go to Input Return ⮕ Deductions ⮕ Adjustments to Income.
- In the Traditional IRA section, enter a 1 in 1=not filing with Form 1040, 2-force in the Taxpayer and/or Spouse columns
