
Entering the Tax Matters Partner (TMP) in the Partnership or S-Corporate Module in Lacerte

Note: The Form 1065 'Designation of Tax Matters Partner' has been replaced with 'Designation of Partnership Representative' for Tax Year 2018.
Follow these steps to designate a listed Partner as the Partnership Representative
- Go to Screen 7, Partner Information, and note the number assigned to the partner in the Partner section
- Note: If the partner has not been added to the Partnership return, then add the partner in Partner Information, Screen 7.
- Go to Screen 1, Client Information.
- Scroll down to the Miscellaneous Info section.
- Enter the number of the Partner identified in Step 1 in the field Partnership Rep Partner # field.
Follow these steps to designate the Partnership Representative, if they are not a listed Partner
- Go to Screen 3, Miscellaneous Information.
- Scroll down to the Designation of Partnership Representative section.
- Enter the applicable information in the following fields within the subsection Partnership Representative if NOT a Partner:
- Name (code 810)
- Street address (code 811)
- City (code 812)
- State (code 813)
- Zip Code (code 814)
- ID Number (code 815)
- Telephone number (code 816)
Note: Use Screen 71 Partnership Representative (8879) to complete Form 8879 as needed. If completing Schedule B-1 to elect out of the centralized partnership audit regime, do not enter partnership representative information.
Follow these steps to designate a listed Partner that is NOT an Individual Partner as the Partnership Representative
- Go to Screen 3, Miscellaneous Information.
- Scroll down to the Designation of Partnership Representative section
- Check the box, Partnership Representative is an Entity under Partnership Representative if NOT a Partner.
- Enter the applicable information in the following fields within the subsection:
- Name (code 800)
- Street address (code 801)
- City (code 802)
- State (code 803)
- Zip Code (code 804)
- ID Number (code 805)
- Telephone number (code 808)
Note: Use Screen 71 Partnership Representative (8979) to complete Form 8979 as needed. If completing Schedule B-1 to elect out of the centralized partnership audit regime, do not enter partnership representative information.
The Tax Matters Partner information will appear on Form 1065, page 4 and includes the following information lines:
- Name of designated TMP
- Identifying number of TMP
- If the TMP is an entity, name of TMP representative
- Phone number of TMP
- Address of designated TMP
Follow these steps to designate a shareholder as the TMP Shareholder:
The Tax Matters Partner (TMP) is a mandatory entry. Although the federal program no longer uses this entry, some states use this field for the individual to contact for tax matters.
- Go to Screen 5, Shareholder Information, and note the number assigned to the shareholder in the Shareholder section
- Note: If the shareholder has not been added to the S-Corporate return, then add the shareholder in Shareholder Information, Screen 5.
- Go to Screen 1, Client Information.
- Scroll down to the Miscellaneous Info section.
- Enter the number for the shareholder, noted from Step 1 above, in the TMP Shareholder # field.
- Note: Only one partner may be entered as the Tax Matters Partner.
Diagnostics:
Partnership: The Tax Matters Partner # entered in Screen 1, Client Information, is not a valid partner. Please select a valid partner number from Screen 7, Partner Information. (ref. #10441)
