Generating Extension Form 2350 for US Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad in Lacerte

by Intuit1 Updated 2 weeks ago

This article will show you how to generate Form 2350, Application for Extension of Time to File U.S. Income Tax Return, in the Individual module of Lacerte.

Important info: Form 2350 needs to be filed on or before the due date of Form 1040. See the IRS Instructions for Form 2350 for more information. If the client was "out of country", they can file up to two months later. See here for more information:

Per Form 2350 instructions, "However, if you have 2 extra months to file your return because you were “out of the country” (defined next), file Form 2350 on or before June 16, 2025.

You should file Form 2350 early enough so that if it isn’t approved, you can still file your return on time. “Out of the country” means that on the regular due date of your return, either (a) you live outside the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of work is outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or (b) you are in military or naval service on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico.

If you qualify as being “out of the country,” you will still be eligible for the extension, even if you are physically present in the United States or Puerto Rico on the regular due date of the return. You don’t have to file a form to get the 2-month extension because you were out of the country. But you will have to attach a statement to your tax return explaining how you qualified."
