Troubleshooting e-file extension critical diagnostic ref. 36127 - Taxpayer's name is being truncated in ProConnect Tax

by Intuit Updated 4 months ago

The following e-file critical diagnostic is generating in the Individual return in ProConnect:

e-file:  Extension: Taxpayer's name is being truncated in the e-file, as a result of truncation, the return will be rejected by the IRS. Shorten the taxpayer's or spouse's name using the following priority:  a. Omit titles such as M. D. or Ph. D. which are not part of the taxpayer's given name.  b. Input middle initial instead of keying the entire middle name.  c. Omit the spouse's middle initial.  d. Omit the taxpayer's middle initial.  e. Substitute initial for spouse's given name.  f. Substitute initial for taxpayer's given name. (ref. #36127)

Why is this diagnostic generating?

Per IRS electronic filing requirements, the word "deceased" is added to the end of the taxpayer's or spouse's name in the E-file. The name could be truncated—or cut off—in the e-file, though not in the Forms tab.

This diagnostic must be cleared to e-file the return.

How do I resolve this diagnostic?

To remove the diagnostic so that the return can be e-filed, you need to shorten the taxpayer's or spouse's name.

Do the following to shorten the taxpayer's or spouse's name:

  • Omit titles such as M.D. or Ph.D, which aren't part of the taxpayer's given name.
  • Enter only the middle initial instead of keying the entire middle name.
  • Omit the middle initial.
  • Remove middle initials from the In Care Of field.
  • Shorten the first name or reduce it to a first initial.

After the diagnostic is cleared, you'll be able to electronically file the return.

Refer to this article for information on resolving the truncation diagnostic that generates when entering a date of death in the program.
