How to run Final Review in ProSeries

by Intuit Updated 2 months ago

We encourage you to use Final Review to review each return prior to filing. The information presented will help you in make sure the return is accurate and complete, as well as to alert you to conditions that will prevent you from electronically filing. Failing to resolve errors identified in Final Review can result in delays and rejects to your electronic returns.

Running Final Review in ProSeries Professional:

  1. Open the return.
  2. From the Information menu select Final Review.
  3. Select the part(s) of Final Review you wish to run.
  4. Select Review.
  5. You'll see three different categories of errors:
    • Green: For Your Information.
      • This is informational and isn't always something that requires correction. This tells you what is being checked, or what is happening automatically.
    • Orange: You Should Fix This Error.
      • These are most common when you are filing an extension and the return is not yet complete. These don't need to be corrected if you're only filing the extension, but they will need to be corrected when your ready to file the return.
    • Red: You Must Fix This Error.
      • These must be fixed to e-file the return unless you are disabling the error check, which isn't recommended. Bypassing these errors often results in e-file rejections.
  6. Open each state and run a final review.

Running Final Review in ProSeries Basic:

  2. From the menu on the left side of the screen select Federal Final Review or State Final Review.
  3. You'll see three different categories of errors:
    • Green: for Your Information.

  4. Open each state and run a final review.

While running Final Review, the following message appears:

  • "The List of Overrides shows all the fields overridden in this return. The program performs calculations according to the IRS instructions for standard situations. Overrides can affect these calculations throughout the return."

This message is an informational message designed to inform you of what the Electronic Filing section of the Final Review is looking for. This message isn't an error in the return.

The List of Overrides section is designed to show a list of any overrides that exist in the return. Any overrides that do exist will appear in the Final Review window after clicking Next.

Overrides will prevent the return from being filed electronically unless error checking is turned off. Use this section of the Final Review to remove or review any information that has been overridden. The override feature should only be used in those rare situations where the standard calculations aren't appropriate for the tax situation.

It is up to the preparer to decide whether they want to e-file with overrides.

In tax year 2018, additional diagnostics related to tax reform have been introduced. These diagnostics will help you review your tax returns, as well as discuss any tax changes with your clients.

The Final Review process has been updated to include many diagnostics related to tax reform. For example, a diagnostic has been added to make you and your client aware of changes to the Standard Deduction.
