How to locate the DMS Database

by Intuit Updated 2 months ago

If you have Document Management System (DMS) installed on a computer that is able to view the database, you can find the database path from within the program.

Follow these steps to locate the database path from within the program:

  1. Open Document Management System.
  2. Locate where it says Current Database Path: (in the bottom middle of the display) and note the path listed.
  3. If DMS doesn't open to a database, or it opens to the wrong one, follow the steps below. Otherwise, continue to Step 4.
    1. The bottom of the database menu should contain the last several databases accessed.  Start from the top and try accessing each database to determine which one is correct.
    2. Go to File.
    3. Select Database.
  4. Close DMS once the database path has been noted.

If you are unable to find the correct database path this way, you can try searching for DATA01A.dat, a file associated with all DMS databases.

  1. Use the Windows key and E on your keyboard to open the File Explorer app.
  2. In the search box near the top right, enter DATA01A.dat.
  3. File Explorer should populate with results along with the directory in which they were found. Each result will correspond to a DMS database.

This requires modification of the Windows Registry. Serious problems may occur if the registry is modified incorrectly. Intuit strongly recommends having an IT professional make these changes if you are not comfortable with editing the registry. It's also strongly recommended to make a backup of the registry before proceeding. See here for further instruction.

  1. Open your Registry by typing Regedit into the Windows Start Menu's Search field or a RUN line.
  2. Locate this Key:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lacerte\DMS\ProgramOptions\LastDataLocation
  3. Open and the location of the last database opened will be displayed.
