CrossLink backup instructions for data conversion

by Intuit Updated 4 months ago

Before you start:

  • This article references ProSeries file types and uses YY to reference the tax year in their file extensions. For example, tax year 2023 files would be .23i, .23p, .23c, or .23s, but will show as .YYi, .YYp, .YYc, or .YYs in this article.
  • Calculate all client files in your original program.
  • Remove any locks.
  • Remove any passwords.
  • Individual (1040)
  1. Create a new folder on your C: drive named ConversionData before you begin the backup process (for example, C:ConversionData).
  2. Open your CrossLink 2023 program.
  3. From the Work in Progress (WIP) screen, select Utility, then System Utilities.
  4. Select the Reset Encryption Key button and Run Utility.
  5. Change Encryption Key to 000. (Without the key, we can't access the backup data. Using a predefined key guarantees we can decrypt it.)
  6. From WIP, under Other Items, select the Backup Returns button.
  7. On the Backup Returns screen, choose Select All to select all returns, or select individual returns by selecting the boxes next to them.
  8. Select the Backup button.
  9. After the program tells you that you've backed up your returns, select Close.
  10. Browse to C:\xlinkYY using My Computer or Windows Explorer.
  11. Locate the file that begins with arYY or bkYY.
  12. Right-click on the file and choose Copy.
  13. Browse to C:\ConversionData.
  14. Right-click and choose Paste.

Open C:\ConversionData to view the files that you've backed up. A valid CrossLink backup contains a file that begins with arYY or bkYY.

What items will be converted?

The main purpose of this conversion is to get your data ready for the following tax year. So viewing a Form 1040 won't display the same results that had been filed. The conversion is very limited and includes only the basic information in the following PDF documents:
