Parents expatriated and gave up US Citizenship a few years ago and live in India. Two children are still US citizens. Son attends college in the US. Daughter studies in India. Parents pay the fees and expenses. What is the filing status of the son and daughter, as they are US citizens and have some investment income. Thanks.

Appreciate the prompt response.
Appreciate any pointer to the reference source or any justification / explanation for the filing status of single vs dependent.
Thanks.

They cannot be claimed as a dependent on another return. Parents are not US citizens so do not file 1040. If parents file anything it would be a 1040NR which does not allow for dependents.
