I spoke with an IRS rep that told me when they resolved the issues preventing a timely filing of a 990 that our tax software (Lacerte) should have a function that allows us to file the returns late but with an explanation for reasonable cause.  I cant find anywhere in Lacerte that allows for this.  Any help?

In the future, try attaching a pdf with the explanation ------------------ not that anybody at the IRS is ever going to read it.

The whole concept behind electronic filing is that no one has to look at the digital file that consists entirely of 1s and 0s.  But attaching a pdf explanation is a good idea, because when the client receives the penalty notice, it can respond with a copy and a paragraph stating "see attached explanation and request for waiver that was filed with the return."
