I efiled a batch of 2021 extensions and they all accepted. My client received received an IRS letter today saying the extension was for the taxpayer and not the spouse. I did not go into the return just submitted the return thru Extension batch. Does anyone know if the efile extension submitted on a joint file is for both taxpayers? The ACK file lists both names. They ultimately filed separate in 2021.

A joint extension covers both spouses.
You'll have to 'splain it to the IRS.
The more I know the more I don’t know.
