I am getting an e-file critical diagnostic for Form 8962 Household income on line 3 must equal the total of line 2a, Modified AGI, and 2b dependents' modified AGI, for efile purposes. If the total of lines 2a and 2b are negative, zero will print on line 3 and this return will need to be filed as a conventional paper return. ref#42135. My client has a loss causing the line 3 to go negative and will not balance because the form does not allow line 3 to be negative. Is there any way around this to be able to still e-file? I hate mailing anything to the IRS because they are so slow.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi there,
To e-file, it must follow these rules.
1. Line 3 MUST equal the total of lines 2a and 2b.
2. If the sum of lines 2a and 2b are a negative then Line 3 MUST entered as Zero.
So IF the sum of lines 2a and 2b are a negative then Line 3 must entered as Zero and with that it breaks Rule 1 so it cannot be e-filed
This does not mean that a taxpayer with a negative modified AGI cannot claim a Premium Tax Credit, only that the return cannot be electronically filed.
Details can be found in a link within this article: Common questions for the Form 8962 and Premium Tax Credit in Lacerte
Hope this helps!
