Whether it\u2019s creating a fake charity or encouraging the use of inaccurate estimates for donated property, taxpayers should be aware and proceed with caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are 3 common <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tag\/fraud-and-security\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"130072316\">scams and schemes<\/a> around charitable donations that were part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-law-and-news\/irs-dirty-dozen-tax-scams-for-2026\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"79703\">2026 Dirty Dozen list<\/a>. Be sure to share this information with your clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fake charities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-law-and-news\/tax-breaks-in-disaster-affected-areas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"59413\">disaster or tragedy<\/a>, scams of all kinds often increase. A common one is when fraudsters create fake charities to collect donations and personal information. A few things to keep in mind before donating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Verify if the organization is a qualified tax-exempt organization. Donations to individuals are not deductible. Taxpayers can use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/charities-non-profits\/search-for-tax-exempt-organizations\" target=\"_blank\">Tax Exempt Organization Search&nbsp;tool<\/a> on&nbsp;IRS.gov&nbsp;to verify whether an organization is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taxpayers who give money or goods to a charity&nbsp;may&nbsp;be able to claim a deduction on their federal tax return if they itemize deductions. Taxpayers who don\u2019t itemize still may be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc506\" target=\"_blank\">deduct cash contributions<\/a>. It\u2019s important to know donations only count if they go towards a qualified tax-exempt organization according to the IRS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep receipts and documentation of all donations, whether cash or other property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Non-cash charitable contribution schemes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This scheme isn\u2019t directly related to disasters, but is still one that taxpayers need to be mindful of. Some schemes involve inflated appraisals of donated property such as syndicated conservation easements, art, or other assets. If a taxpayer donates property or goods, they need to keep good records and accurately document the fair market value. Don\u2019t be tempted by promises to eliminate or substantially reduce tax liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reporting a suspected scam<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxpayers and tax professionals can report suspected tax fraud, scams, identity theft, or other tax-related wrongdoings to the IRS. Tips can be <a href=\"https:\/\/IRS.gov\/submitatip\" target=\"_blank\">submitted confidentially<\/a> using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. This site consolidates IRS fraud-reporting options into one location and routes tips to the appropriate IRS office.
