{"id":8323,"date":"2017-07-05T08:00:44","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/?p=8323"},"modified":"2017-07-05T17:53:52","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T22:53:52","slug":"understanding-common-irs-notices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/tax-law-and-news\/understanding-common-irs-notices\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Common IRS Notices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, the IRS will contact a taxpayer through a notice or letter, explain the reason for the contact, and give the taxpayer instructions on how to handle the issue.\u00a0The IRS sends millions of letters and notices to taxpayers each year.\u00a0Although receiving a notice from the IRS <em>can<\/em> make anyone anxious, many notices are easy to resolve and don&#8217;t result in full-blown <a href=\"http:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tag\/audit-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_tpc-audit-cat\">audits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have clients who receive notices, tell them not to panic! Tell them to follow the instructions in the letter \u2013 or you can help and answer the notice for them. In many cases, there is no need to call or visit the IRS to answer most notices.\u00a0However, remember to tell your clients to retain copies of any correspondence with their tax records, and\/or you can keep the correspondence with their files online at your office.<\/p>\n<p>CP2000 and CP12 are the most common notices:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/understanding-your-cp2000-notice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-understandingCP2000\" target=\"_blank\">CP2000 Notice<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 This is issued when the income and\/or payment information doesn\u2019t match the information reported on the tax return.
