Please review the following list <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc303.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-taxtopicsTC303\" target=\"_blank\">from the IRS<\/a> to make sure you\u2019re not missing anything in your tax practice. These tips were written for the taxpayer, but they serve as friendly reminders of common mistakes to avoid to help ensure error-free returns, and delay-free refunds, for your clients.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Before filing your return, make sure it&#8217;s correct and complete. Review your entire return, even if you have someone else prepare it, because any errors may delay the processing of your return.<\/li>\n<li>Submitting your tax return electronically ensures greater accuracy than mailing your return. The e-file system often detects common errors and rejects your tax return, sending it back to you for correction. This could save you delays in processing your tax return. For more information, click on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/filing\/e-file-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-efilingOptions\" target=\"_blank\">e-file logo<\/a> on IRS.gov.<\/li>\n<li>Did you clearly print your name, taxpayer identification number and current address, including your ZIP code, directly on your return?<\/li>\n<li>Did you choose only one correct filing status? See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/what-is-my-filing-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-WhatsMyFilingStatus\" target=\"_blank\">What Is My Filing Status<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Did you check the appropriate exemption boxes for your personal, spousal and dependency exemptions? Did you enter the total number of exemptions? Review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/can-i-claim-my-personal-and-or-spousal-exemption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-CanIclaimExemptio\" target=\"_blank\">Personal\/Spousal Exemptions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/who-can-i-claim-as-a-dependent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-whoCanIClaim\" target=\"_blank\">Dependency Exemptions<\/a> to find out if you qualify.<\/li>\n<li>Did you enter the names and taxpayer identification numbers for everyone listed on your return? If using Social Security numbers, they must be entered\u00a0<em>exactly\u00a0<\/em>as those names and numbers appear on each person&#8217;s Social Security card. If there have been\u00a0<em>any<\/em>\u00a0name changes, be sure to contact the Social Security Administration at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_ssa\" target=\"_blank\">SSA.gov<\/a>, or call them at 800-772-1213.<\/li>\n<li>Did you enter your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-income\" target=\"_blank\">income<\/a>\u00a0on the correct lines?<\/li>\n<li>Did you calculate\u00a0deductions\u00a0and\u00a0credits\u00a0correctly, put them on the right lines, and attach the necessary forms or schedules?<\/li>\n<li>Did you put brackets around negative amounts?<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re taking the standard deduction and checked any box, indicating either you or your spouse were age 65 or older, or blind, did you find the correct standard deduction, using the chart in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/i1040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-i1040\" target=\"_blank\">Form 1040 Instructions<\/a>, or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/i1040a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-i1040a\" target=\"_blank\">Form 1040A Instructions<\/a>? See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/how-much-is-my-standard-deduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-HowMuchStndDeduction\" target=\"_blank\">How Much Is My Standard Deduction?<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Did you figure the tax correctly? If you used the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/i1040tt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-i1040tt\" target=\"_blank\">tax tables<\/a>, did you use the correct column for your filing status?<\/li>\n<li>Did you sign and date the return? If it&#8217;s a joint return, did your spouse also sign and date the return?<\/li>\n<li>If you received an\u00a0IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) from the IRS, see &#8220;identity protection PIN&#8221; in the instructions for your form and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/the-identity-protection-pin-ip-pin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-theIDprotectionPIN\" target=\"_blank\">The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Do you have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/fw2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-w2\" target=\"_blank\">Form W-2<\/a>\u00a0from each of your employers, and did you attach Copy B of each Form W-2 to your return? If you have more than one job, combine the wages and withholdings from all Forms W-2 you received and report those amounts on one return.<\/li>\n<li>Did you attach each\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1099r.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-f1099r\" target=\"_blank\">Form 1099-R<\/a>\u00a0that shows federal tax withholding?<\/li>\n<li>Did you attach all other necessary schedules and forms, in the order of the sequence number shown in the upper right-hand corner?<\/li>\n<li>Did you use the correct\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-wherePaperTaxReturns\" target=\"_blank\">mailing address<\/a>\u00a0from your tax form instructions?<\/li>\n<li>Did you use the correct postage on the envelope?<\/li>\n<li>If you owe tax, did you enclose a check or money order, made payable to the &#8220;United States Treasury&#8221; with your return, and include your name, address, SSN, daytime telephone number, tax form and tax year on the payment?
