Some <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tag\/fraud-and-security\/\">common electronic scams<\/a> thieves use are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sending <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-law-and-news\/irs-dirty-dozen-phishing-smishing-and-more\/\">phishing emails<\/a> to taxpayers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Posing as an IRS social media account to contact taxpayers about a fake bill or refund.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texting taxpayers about fake &#8220;tax credits&#8221; or &#8220;stimulus payments.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These messages will often direct taxpayers to click fraudulent links they claim are IRS websites or other online tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IRS only sends text messages with the taxpayer\u2019s permission, and only collects the taxpayer\u2019s cell phone number or email address if they subscribe to receive messages from the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>Letters and notices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A letter or notice is the first way the IRS will contact a taxpayer. There are a few ways a taxpayer can check to see if it&#8217;s really the IRS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/online-account-for-individuals\" target=\"_blank\">secure IRS Online Account<\/a> to see if the letter or notice is in their file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review common IRS letters and notices: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/understanding-your-irs-notice-or-letter\" target=\"_blank\">Understanding Your IRS Notice or Letter<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/let-us-help-you\" target=\"_blank\">IRS customer service<\/a> directly to authenticate it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify any collection notice from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/small-businesses-self-employed\/private-debt-collection\" target=\"_blank\">private collection agency<\/a> has the same Taxpayer Authentication Number as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/understanding-your-cp40-notice\" target=\"_blank\">Notice CP40<\/a> the taxpayer received from the IRS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>Phone calls<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IRS agents may call to confirm an appointment or discuss items for a scheduled audit, after an initial letter or notice. Taxpayers should know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The IRS does not leave pre-recorded, urgent, or threatening messages. Scammers will falsely tell victims that if they do not call back, a warrant will be issued for their arrest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private collection agencies contracted by the IRS may call taxpayers to collect certain outstanding inactive tax liabilities, but only after the taxpayer and their representative have received written notice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IRS and its authorized private collection agencies will never ask a taxpayer to pay using any form of pre-paid card, store, or online gift card. Taxpayers can review the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\" target=\"_blank\">IRS payments page<\/a> for all legitimate ways to make a payment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>In-person visits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IRS ended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-ends-unannounced-revenue-officer-visits-to-taxpayers-major-change-to-end-confusion-enhance-safety-as-part-of-larger-agency-transformation-efforts\" target=\"_blank\">most unannounced visits to taxpayers by agency revenue officers<\/a> to improve overall safety for taxpayers and IRS employees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Identity thieves can prey on anyone, at any time.
